C.A. Furth in reply to Tolkien's letter, Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to C.A. Furth • 21 July 1946 (#2518), remarks that the German translation of The Hobbit is not currently known. He notes that the last headquarters for Rütten & Loening was bombed and the occupying Western countries have not given them a license to begin publishing again. He says that GA&U would need a ruling of whether the original contract was still valid. He mentions that translations into other languages are being hampered by GA&U not having enough copies to send out, but says that Czech, Danish, and Spanish translations are being considered for The Hobbit. He does note, however, that a Dutch publisher has turned it down. Susan Dagnall he reports married before the war and now has a family.
