To

Date
30 September 1946
Type

Transcript

Tolkien expresses delight at the prospect of publishing "Farmer Giles of Ham" but cites academic commitments as a hindrance to providing more material promptly. While he acknowledging the possibility of completing more work, expresses a preference for dedicating spare hours to a Hobbit sequel, which he believes is superior.

Portions of the letter were reproduced in Carpenter's Letters, and additional quotes in Chronology. The letter is held in the Tolkien-George Allen & Unwin Archive, HarperCollins.
