Tolkien mentions receiving letters from Horus Engels regarding a German translation, and while Engels doesn't explicitly propose himself as a translator, he sends illustrations that Tolkien finds too "Disnified" for their taste, with portrayals of Bilbo and Gandalf not aligning with his envisioned characters. He informs Unwin about their upcoming move to a small house at 3 Manor Road, expressing hope that it will resolve domestic issues, and give him some time to finish his 'magnum opus' (The Lord of the Rings).
In Chronology, p. 331, Hammond and Scull detail a portion of the letter which was not published. Tolkien believes that the question of illustrations should be left to the publisher, but remarks that Priscilla had suggested Milein Cosman. He judges her as talented and of merit but does not believe her to be an illustrator. If GA&U want to see her work he will ask her to call them directly.
