Writing to Wrenn, in response to his memorandum concerning a grant, Tolkien remarks that a revival of a Readership in Phonetics that it should be connected to a "department that is primarily concerned with a literary language." He notes that the school is primarily connected with "the history of written and cultivated English" and he would "resist" any person there who was not concerned with "historical philology". He continues his rebuttal of the idea and closes with the remark that such a chair should not be connected with the University but rather the Philological Society.
