Interesting eBay Auctions

Mar 14, 2012

I am going to start putting interesting eBay auctions I run across (separate from the head scratching thread The Wonders of eBay ) that I think are interesting or worth a look. Feel free to add your own, or add commentary on anything posted here. I am not the seller or affiliated with any of these sellers, by default.

If you don't own this copy and live in the UK, then I highly recommend it.

I do not know this person or if this is actually from Tolkien's library, but I thought it was interesting enough to post here, though the item is not for sale on eBay: http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/clt/3961760723.html

This copy is similar to a copy the Tolkien Library has for sale, but that doesn't mean this other copy for sale is authentic: http://www.tolkienlibrary.com/tolkien-book-store/CLP0213.htm

I'm interested to see what you guys think...

The stickers look okay to me - I have some items myself which have these. As Christina Scull said in her Tolkien Collector essay about this subject; having a label is a fair indication that an item came from Tolkien's library, but the absence of one doesn't mean it didn't!

I have a copy of the 'Losenger' offprint which,, it says here in a pencilled note, came from Tolkien's library. But that doesn't mean that he necessarily looked at this one, or handled it - he'd have been sent some copies to give to colleagues. I expect he might have had a small boxful of these offprints, judging by the amount I've seen for sale over the years.

I should say that I only asked if the seller could change to international shipping. S/he then suggested to change to a fixed price, which I agreed upon -- the auction had no bids by then, IIRC. Strangely enough, the seller didn't relist the auction until some days later, when a bid had been placed. I thought it was kind of odd -- but what to do? Sorry for stepping on your toes, Trotter: it wasn't my intention!

You did nothing wrong, well done on getting the item

If it is any consolation, Trotter, I only paid GBP 2.40 for my copy with Dust Jacket, and there were no other bidders. I expect another copy will be along soon enough :)

Got one at last, double Stu's outlay though

I can't remember if this has been mentioned but the ISBN is different in the copy that I got from my original copy without dust-jacket.

BookPeople Hobbit (dust-jacket) ISBN 978-0-00-792704-3
HarperCollins Hobbit (no dust-jacket) ISBN 978-0-00-748730-1

I don't have any of my books at hand at present, so can't recall if this Tolkien letter (a clipping of which is pictured in the auction below) has been published anywhere before, or not.

I thought these library binding covers were interesting to document (since they are after-market, not really something I would collect.) Some other completist might be interested though, and someone might ask about these covers someday and I wanted a record of them.
