I'm wondering if anyone can help me out with this; is this the first printing of the Canadian paperback Lord of the Rings edition?

According to Hammond's Bibliography, The Lord of the Rings "was published in Canada by Ballantine Books under license from Allen & Unwin from 1965 through the end of 1966." (p120) The American Ballantine books (Remington art covers) state that there were seven Canadian printings between 1965 and 1969. Is the ISBN on the back cover of this any indication that it is not from 1965? Does anyone have any further information regarding the Canadian printings? Any help would be much appreciated as always, thanks!

I don't believe that ISBNs came into use until '67, so don't think this could be a first printing if the first was in 1965. Also, the copyright page mentions the second edition, 1966.

I always liked these Canadian softcover editions.

Thanks Stu, that makes sense. Has anyone seen the first print/edition of the Canadian paperback? Does it have the same cover as this one or any indication of being a first print?

Methuen published an authorized Canadian paperback edition as well. The copyright page indicates they were first published in 1971.

Indeed... came with a nice slipcase.

I'm still curious about the Canadian 1st/1sts. If anyone ever comes up with any info, please remember me I'll update this thread if I come across anything myself.
