Friend of mine noticed this and we were wondering if anyone had any thoughts on it (or if it's been posted about before). The name of the inscriber is the same on these two 2nd impression copies both with a date (July 6) from before the 1st impression was published.
I don't recall seeing these before. My interpretation of the handwriting is that they both say "in gratitude for July 6 1937". My guess is that these books were given at a later time in response to something that happened on July 6. Just a guess though.

There has been quite an escalation of asking prices lately (in one case the same copy going from selling at £1,200 - asking $14,000 in a couple of months with one sale in the middle). Rare_book_cellar is notorious in the Easton press community and seems to have now taken an interest in finding mugs in the Tolkien space, sadly.
I think these wild asking prices are just pulling more books onto the market.
Hi. I'm the person selling the copy on Ebay UK on behalf of my customer. What a fantastic coincidence and we'll spotted!! He bought this copy around 40 years ago for 60p from Michael Moon's Bookshop in Whitehaven, Cumbria, UK,which is less than an hour's drive from me. I wonder how the other copy ended up in California. I wonder what the connection is between the 2 original owners and the person writing the inscriptions. I guess we'll never know! Krystl ?
No, all these copies have some kind of restoration... I'm looking for a copy that has no restoration. I know... very rare to find. But I'm certain someone here knows something, not?
