Tolkein (sic) Biography

Nov 7

Was re-reading Carpenter's Biography of Tolkien on my Kindle app, and shuddered when I ran across the mis-spelled "Tolkein". Did a quick search, and it appears three times! I wonder who was in charge of proof-reading this (and I am guessing that the US ebook is typeset differently than the UK one, but would love if someone could verify that).

I checked and my US first edition hardcover does not have the error in any of the three locations. My 1st paperback printing (from 2000) does have the first instance (see photo, last paragraph on the page) but the other two locations were correctly spelled at that time.

Same mistakes in the UK version on the Kindle.

HarperCollins are correcting this, when this happens people who have bought the book are sent an email stating that a revised version of the book is available to download, which replaces the version that you already have.

Hopefully the errors in the print editions get corrected in the next impression as well. 😉

Findegil is Tolkein still in the latest print editions of this book.

Most likely useless data point, but Amazon.com has a "look inside" feature for the print book, which does show that "Tolkein" appears once (same place as my 2000 paperback impression). Amazon.co.uk does not have "look inside" turned on for this title, though.
