History of Middle-Earth Limited edition (2000-2001)

Hello everybody,
I just bought the 3 volumes of the History of middle-earth limited edition. I made an offer on ebay and got all 3 for 550$+shipping, which I think it's a reasonable price (first two I'd say near fine / fine and the third is in shrinkwrap).

I was wondering: is it normal that the third book has a different size? Why on Earth would they make these different? I don't want to open the third one but I was wondering if it's a different impression.

Anyone has noticed the same issue?

Many thanks, best regards,
Max

These were definitely inconsistent in size from the get-go. I am trying to find older posts that talk about this previously here on the site, will post a link or two when they show up.

No it is not a different impression, the heights do not match on these editions, and HarperCollins were so annoyed with this that they no longer release bible paper editions.

They also try and release editions that match in terms of height, spine descriptions, dust-jackets, etc. but don't always get it right.

Oh my... is it THAT difficult? Can't believe they got it wrong on a limited edition set.

I'm glad I got the set however cause it looks so nice. Books' prices baffle me though, I've seen these editions sell for 600$ each on other websites... It's always so difficult for me to judge which prices are "good".

There is an interview on TolkienLibrary w/ David Brawn about that - if I can find the exact link, I'll pass it along. Something tells me it's back from 2010 though.....

I think the price you paid was about right, perhaps a bit on the low side. It used to be that Vol 1 was more expensive when the prices of these peaked in 2003-2006ish. Vol 3 is typically the cheapest.

I agree, $600 seems good to me. Did you see these editions actually sell for $600 each? Or did you see them listed for sale at that price?

I saw them listed for sale at 600$ each, however that seemed overpriced to me.

I agree with Stu: good price, slightly on low side. I mean, I'd have thought picking up vol. I on its own for under $200 pretty hard. So, all-in, $550 seems pretty competitive.

Bought mine for:

Vol. III - £98 (2003)
Vol. II - £100 (2015)
Vol. I - £262 (2017)

So in total £460; ~$580 in today's money.
(I bought these all in the UK; postage outlay was <£10.)
