For evidence of its importance, consider this: the last time an original Magna Carta came up for sale, in 2007, it sold for over $21 million (£10.5 million).

So I take it there is an original Magna Carta in someone's private collection out there?

It is owned by David Rubenstein, but still on display at the National Archives (in the David Rubenstein Gallery).

It was bought by David Rubenstein, one of the founders of the Carlyle Group. It was already in residence at the National Archive in Washington until the owner decided to sell it. He (Rubenstein) wanted to see it remain there for the public to see.

This is incredible. Those notebooks are so beautiful and I think I will have to arrange avisit to the city of my birth to see them.
