As you probably know, two groups of very interesting documents by Tolkien appeared a few days ago:
Concerning 'The Hoard':
https://historical.ha.com/itm/books/sc ... rningthe-h/a/6258-42010.sComments to the Index:
https://historical.ha.com/itm/books/pr ... ding-an-au/a/6258-42009.sI am trying to transcribe them, but failed to recognize quite a few words. Could you help me?
Concerning 'The Hoard' is too long so I put it here, [MOD removed for copyright], which you can edit directly. I have marked word(s) I don't know by
/[??]
As for Comments to the Index, I have great difficulties with the following sentences:
footnote of pic.4: †Please include all uses of English as a for of things/persons/places. Peculiar to [??]. As e.g. waybread ([??] Old English [??] of viaticum), or .
Tolkien's red comments on the typescript [MOD removed for copyright], I can recognize only 3:
1. not a title of Sauron
3. All named creatures are "persons"
4. [Mellyrn is] plural

With two others I have literally just a few minutes ago completed the first run through all 9 pages and can certainly correct most of what I see in yours. I will sort it out when I am back on my computer in a few hours.
I have reached out to Carl Hostetter privately for help with one word on page 6 and the couple of longer struckout sentences if he can help.
Edit: It will be interesting to see if the "surpassing" you have placed on page 6 is correct. It is that word I asked Carl for help with as I have dismissed your reading, as well as many of my own readings so far.

Thanks so much! I'm sure I've made tons of mistakes outside the [] too

I can only hope my reading has no huge diversion of meaning.

Like my own haha. We have had 3 of us transcribing and correcting as we go. To be fair, it's one of the better Tolkien writings so most of it has been reasonably straightforward but we've a few instances that stumped us.

I find Carl's tips in “Editing the Tolkienian Manuscript” quite useful :)

The footnote looks like "Please use all uses of English as a translation for the names of things/persons/places peculiar to the tale. As e.g. waybread (actualy derived from an Old English translation of viaticum), or ?." I can't get that last word.

Thanks to you both!
I find two more interesting points in Concerning 'The Hoard' besides the alternate Ruin of Doriath. “The Silmarils had become to Fëanor, symbols and instruments of power: he called himself ‘the lord of the lights’.” “the Sons of the Valar aided by the remnants of the Elves and the Dúnedain (or Men of Elf-alliance), overcame the Dark Lord in what was called the ‘Last Battle’”
