The Fellowship of the Ring: Exclusive Edition - The Lord of the Rings Book 1 (Paperback)

448 Pages / Published: 01/09/2022

Mailer/envelope

Waterstones Exclusive Edition with sprayed edge and map inside printing

Continuing the story begun in The Hobbit, this is the first part of Tolkien's epic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings, featuring a striking black cover based on Tolkien's own design, the definitive text, and a detailed map of Middle-earth.

Sauron, the Dark Lord, has gathered to him all the Rings of Power - the means by which he intends to rule Middle-earth. All he lacks in his plans for dominion is the One Ring - the ring that rules them all - which has fallen into the hands of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins.

In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care. Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.

Now published again in B format, J.R.R. Tolkien's great work of imaginative fiction has been labelled both a heroic romance and a classic fantasy fiction. By turns comic and homely, epic and diabolic, the narrative moves through countless changes of scene and character in an imaginary world which is totally convincing in its detail.

Frodo and the Companions of the Ring have been beset by danger during their quest to prevent the Ruling Ring from falling into the hands of the Dark Lord by destroying it in the Cracks of Doom. They have lost the wizard, Gandalf, in the battle with an evil spirit in the Mines of Moria; and at the Falls of Rauros, Boromir, seduced by the power of the Ring, tried to seize it by force. While Frodo and Sam made their escape the rest of the company were attacked by Orcs.

Now they continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin - alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go.

The last Waterstones exclusive edition was the 2013 cloth bound hardbacks, so they do not do them that often.

I meant to say in general there seem to be one too many LOTR editions being released.

If Waterstones come to the publisher and say we want an exclusive edition published, I would be very surprised if they said no, because they are a business after all.

I found the ISBNs on these three interesting - this is the first time I have seen an ISBN-13 that doesn't start with "978" which is typically used to extend an ISBN-10 into a 13 digit number. It looks like this is the first time HarperCollins has done a (Tolkien) book that doesn't have an ISBN-10 number?

I assume that Publishers are thinking of dropping the ISBN-10 codes completely and just use ISBN-13 going forward. Not that sure of the relevance of ISBN-10 any more.

Why was the 10-ISBN system retained after ISBN-13 was introduced? i understand fro existing books but new ones?
