My apologies. GBP then :)

Makes it even more expensive even back then I assume?

Historically on that date the pound to dollar conversion was 1.6677. So it sold for about $1217 in 2014 dollars.

And then to convert 2014 dollars to today, looks like a factor of 1.25. $1521 in today’s dollars.

And then a random multiplier for demand ?

The last record of a fine set selling on eBay on this site is from 2014 for 720 euro.

As you say, this is the last record that you could find listed here. I would say that the eBay listings on this site are quite extensive (yours truly works very hard to make it that) but is not an exhaustive list. And I certainly wouldn't base all my assumptions about the market over a 9 year period on it.

I really appreciate it. It’s a helpful tool for collectors. Especially for someone recently getting into collecting. I will say that set which sold in December would have even been good enough for me. I believe the tear in the DJ could have been repaired and I would call it a day (or left alone). A missed opportunity because back then I didn’t know how to sort by “world” location on eBay. ?

I didn’t say the set was obscenely rare in any form, I said a very good plus or fine set. Since I’ve only counted 4 after searching countlessly over months (one belongs to Laurin on this site), I just assume it’s not very common. And I’m sure there are many other existing fine sets in peoples collections, but that’s where they are remaining it seems.

Perhaps, if you offered a few thousand £/€/$ you might entice a collector (here or elsewhere) to part with their near fine set. Offering less than half what the prior set sold for (that you could find, I am sure other sets have changed hands though) isn't going to entice someone on the fence to make a deal with you.

I agree with others that this is not a very rare item to be looking for, but I agree with you that they don't show up on the open market all that often in the condition you are looking for. Simple economics says that the less you want to pay, the longer you will have to hunt, and the more you are willing to pay, the more likely someone will be willing to part with theirs.

I would think that if you offered £10,000 for a set (and were serious), a dozen people would jump up and be willing to sell theirs to you. They are out there, but not at €650 unless you happen to get lucky - which could happen! Not likely at all in a few weeks of asking around though.

I came to the price of 650 euro based on recent sales and not exactly that one singular sale from dogfark In 2014(who I think lists his stuff pretty high anyway). I do agree it might be low for a set like Laurin’s (the finest set!!!) who told me they purchased theirs for 450 euro in 2013 if I’m not mistaking. I have stated on another group that I’m willing to pay UP TO (or more) than 650 based on the condition. Well, it’s really hard to say…

I was told that the value of the RU set dropped in recent years, and now it’s starting to go back up again along with everything else.

On a humorous note, There is one fine set listed on Etsy for $8500.

I spoke to that person who is listing that set and they wouldn’t budge and taunted me. I admire him for his tenacity.
