I recently purchased my first copy of Pearl and was surprised to find the signature of Deborah Webster inside. I checked with the seller, who confirmed he had acquired the book during the liquidation of her family estate in 2020.
The only thing I know about her is that she was the recipient of Tolkien’s Letter Carpenter #213: Letter from J.R.R. Tolkien to Deborah Webster • 25 October 1958 (#340)
As a newer collector, I was thrilled to come across something with this kind of personal connection. My collection isn’t very extensive (at least not by the standards of some), so finds like this are especially meaningful to me.
If anyone has more information about Deborah Webster Rogers, I’d love to learn more. I'm fascinated by the stories behind the books, not just the books themselves.
