This 1st printing of Tolkien & Gordon's Sir Gawain was listed for ~$11,450. Showing now as sold, though I don't know if it sold for that price. On the one hand, jacketless versions of the 1st printing are regularly listed in the $2,000-$2,500 range (though many sit unpurchased at that price), and I have never seen one on the market with a dustjacket in this good of condition. So seemingly the price could be justified as 10x the price a jacketless version. But the price still stood out to me.

Any thoughts from more experienced collectors on whether this is a reasonable price (or maybe just reasonable in the price-inflated bubble the market is in), or is this actually way too much to ask?

I’ve never seen any first Sir Gawain that wasn’t an association copy sell for this much, (don’t think I’d ask this even for my association copy) and have a hard time seeing someone pay it. However that ‘82 Silmarillion that just sold is just one of a good many indicators of where the market seems to be moving. So maybe…

I am not among the experienced collectors and I squirm at the price but I would think it is reasonable. If a jacket makes up 70-75% of a rare books value then it is a fair price. Especially given the condition.

PH is also known to move books in and out of their online and brick/mortar store fronts, so it’s not a given this item even sold.

This is also a very important point. We don't know what a book has sold for, only the original price so in these instances we are not especially informed.

I don't dislike the price for the condition of the jacket but as I said, I am not among the collectors who would be interested in this. Maybe I would feel different when transferring my 11k though 😅
