No idea about the seller. I would say if you're really interested in the set then shoot them a message and ask for more details on their listing.

TolkienBooks shows that the first 6 impressions of the 2nd edition were printed with the same DJ design. Is there really anyway to distinguish these by printing? I haven't seen anything, but maybe there are small details can help differentiate...?

Printings 1-4 use a darker gold color for the rings on the front cover
Printings 5-6 use a brighter yellow color for the rings on the front cover

eBay has pretty good buyer protections. I would take notice of the marks on the front boards of a couple of the volumes, though (look at the area below the insert picture). That said, these really do have crappy bindings, so marks are somewhat par for the course due to Folio's unfortunate art-silk choice. My first copy of Fellowship was very marked (looked way worse than these, but in the same basic position).
