Ronald Eames sends Tolkien forty-four illustrations for Farmer Giles of Ham, twelve more than Pauline Baynes was required to provide. He asks Tolkien to comment on them and decide what can be omitted. Baynes has referenced them by page numbers in the typescript. GA&U want Tolkien to deal with the matter quickly so that the book can be put into print to be released for the Christmas market.
