This letter to Arthur Tolkien, father of Ronald and Hilary, was dictated by Tolkien's nurse.

Notes

Mabel, Tolkien's mother, received a telegram that day that Arthur had become very ill. He died the following day from haemorrhaging, so the letter was never sent.
