TCG Letter #522 / Carpenter Letter #174

From
J.R.R. Tolkien
To
Lord Halsbury
Date
10 November 1955
Type
Unknown
Transcript
Partial
Lord Halsbury had suggested to Tolkien that if Allen and Unwin were unwilling to publish The Silmarillion commercially, perhaps it could be published by subscription.

All references in The Lord of the Rings existed in the legends written before it was begun, said Tolkien. Now that the publishers wanted the previously rejected Silmarillion Tolkien planned to prepare the material for publication, as soon as he could find some time.

In the 2023 revised edition of Letters, a paragraph listing all of the legendarium materials that Tolkien has available is restored, making more clear what Tolkien thinks Lord Halsbury might conceivably be interested in.
