To
C.A. Furth (Allen & Unwin)
Date
31 August 1937
Type

Transcript

Tolkien enclosed the last of his coloured illustrations for the American edition of The Hobbit. He asked Allen & Unwin to forward it to Houghton Mifflin. Among them is 'The Hill: Hobbiton Across the Water' and he asks C.A. Furth to forward the illustrations onto HM if they are good enough. Tolkien asks if he could get some remuneration for the illustrations as the produced them for Houghton Mifflin, and they involved a lot of labour, though he says that if GA&U decide to use them, he expects no further payment for them given the costs they have incurred on his behalf.

He also encloses comments on the dustjacket flap copy for The Hobbit including errors and includes a revised version of the blurb.

The 2023 Revised edition of Letters adds three sentences at the end where Tolkien tries to ease the blow of critiquing Furth's drafted dust-jacket blurb.
