I've never actually read a review of this (Has anyone here read it and can give a review?) I have one of the three parts (can't remember which part) amongst a bulk bunch of Mallorns and Amon Hens, but is sat in the UK and has been since before COVID.

Edit: Checked my eBay history, the part I have is volume 3 (along with a big stack of other stuff for £22)

This listing is for the true first impression of the US edition of The Book of Lost Tales Part I, with the sheets printed in Great Britain. Much less common than the ones with sheets printed in the USA.

Hammond A21b - First American Edition, imported sheets, 1984 (4000 copies)
vs.
Hammond A21c - First American edition, corrected US sheets, 1984 (30,000 copies)

Both of the above have the number line going down to "1"

I believe this is a POD copy. Cannot see the price, but it lacks the "S" in the number line. I've ended up with a couple of these, and they are not the original 1st printing. The ones I've run across have a $30.00 price on the dj, where the true 1st has $14.95 price on it. The last time I asked the seller and he said it was $30.00 price, then shortly it showed up 'clipped'. So watch for the S in the number line.

I cannot speak to the $30 Price but:

I believe this to be the much less common "true" USA First Edition without the "S" in the numberline.

I have both editions and:

The copy without "S" has a price of $14.95 on the DJ. This copy also has the year "1984" on the title page which the edition with the "S" does not. Hence my belief that this printing without "S" takes priority over the other as HMCO normally print Year on Title page of first printing as is the case with other vols of HoME.

From recollection there were approx 4000 copies with sheets printed in the UK (True First) with approx 30,000 copies of the other First Edition with "S" on numberline and lacking year on title page.

Hope above makes sense! I am open to corrections.

I have both versions, myself

  • Hammond A21b - First American Edition, imported sheets, 1984 (4000 copies)
  • "Printed in Great Britain" above the number line
  • No "S" on the number line (confirmed in Hammond as well) "10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1"
  • $14.95 price on dust jacket

  • Hammond A21c - First American edition, corrected US sheets, 1984 (30,000 copies)
  • "Printed in the United States of America" above the number line
  • S on number line (confirmed in Hammond as well) "S 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1"
  • $14.95 on dust jacket


If it says it was printed in Great Britain, it has to be the true first American edition, none of the later copies ever say this. I do agree, there have been reprints at the $30 price that still have the full number line. Why they did that, I will never know.

Is there such a thing as a POD of the HMH editions?

If the source was the original UK sheets, then I wonder if they might actually also state "printed in Great Britain" as well?
