Has anyone made a comparison between the new "Deluxe" Pictures and the classic one? If there's a topic specific to this edition, I couldn't find it.

I was wondering if the picture quality improvements and additional content make it a worthy purchase.

It was discussed in this thread a while back - I will move things around into a dedicated thread at some point so it is easier to find. Here is a good starting place: https://www.tolkienguide.com/modules/n ... t_id=36262#forumpost36262

Overall - If you have the first or second editions, you probably don't need the newest (third) edition. I don't think the picture reproductions were improved in this new edition - they were re-scanned but the colours seem off, and the physical size is smaller.

Great comparisons. The colours certainly look different, I suppose it's a matter of taste. I'm still on the fence about it. I wonder if it's possible to confirm the colour accuracy against the original paintings. I suppose not.

However, I really like the style of the slipcase and cover. It would looke nice next to the other "The Art of..." books.

Nick Groom has an upcoming book, surprisingly enough for September 2022.

I can only hope they will correct the Middle-earth spelling by then

Interesting that they have another UK publishing imprint Allen & Unwin, https://atlantic-books.co.uk/allen-unwin/, suspect that publishing arm is off-limits for Middle-earth related books

The picture quality is - IMHO - much worse on the new edition. A huge amount of detail has been lost in the digital cleanup. I haven't compared every image back to back, but the ones I did had noticeable detail loss. The colours are likely more accurate on the new one, but I think the older editions represent the actual original pictures and their textures rather better.

The new one is perfectly serviceable, but if you have the 1979 or 1982 it doesn't really add anything (1982 obviously gives some additional verbeage and the corrected Hobbiton sketch, which was not the intended version in 1979).

I really don't get this listing if it is indeed 3 of each paperback. At over $17 a piece who on earth is buying this? Surely bookstores buy through trade accounts?
