*this date is given a question mark by Hammond and Scull, see Chronology, p. 368. We have no current information to give a confirmed dating but as Tolkien remarks in Carpenter's Letter #120 (J.R.R. Tolkien to Ronald Eames, 16 March 1949) that he will return the illustrations the following day, it is assumed that he did so. Eames replies, see Letter from Ronald Eames to J.R.R.
