Ronald Eames sends a coloured illustration to Tolkien, the first of two intended for Farmer Giles of Ham. Pauline Baynes has said she can change the colours if Tolkien does not approve. Eames hopes proofreading on the book is going well. "The line blocks for the text are being made and as soon as he has the block pulls he will prepare a complete paste-up so that page proofs can be made."^{Chronology, p. 369[1]}
